Sankaet Pathak, CEO of Foundation Future Industries, told WIRED that his company plans to start giving its humanoid robots lethal capabilities soon. "We have some kinetic things we're exploring," he said. He means weapons. "We'll probably unveil something in the next couple of months." Eric Trump is the company's chief strategy adviser. The robot is called Phantom MK1. It has been tested with Ukrainian forces.
Meanwhile, in a San Francisco office building, a humanoid robot built by a company called 1X is doing intern work. It opens doors. It carries objects. It plugs itself in when its battery is low. Its hands have 25 degrees of freedom - two fewer than a human's - and can move fast enough to hyperextend in directions human fingers cannot. It is waterproof so it can wash its own hands.
These are the two poles of the humanoid robotics industry in mid-2026. The soldier and the intern. The killing machine and the household helper. The gap between them is real, but it is closing, and the rate at which it is closing is the story.
The Dexterity Problem
The barrier between the intern robot and the soldier robot has always been hands. A robot that can walk is impressive. A robot that can walk and carry a rifle is a logistics platform. A robot that can walk, carry a rifle, aim it, reload it, and operate it in a combat environment is something else entirely. That requires dexterity at the level of human hands, and human hands are the most complex mechanical system in the body.
1X's Neo robot is the current benchmark for humanoid dexterity. Its five-finger hands use actuators designed to replicate how tendons move human hands. Cameras and AI help it understand what it is grabbing. The fingers can grip odd shapes, detect when something is slipping, and move with enough speed that 1X's engineers describe the motion as "freaky fast." The range of motion, according to 1X's director of actuators, might even be better than a human's.

The Phantom MK1 does not have 1X's hands. It does not need them yet. Foundation's current use cases are logistics, reconnaissance, and inspection - tasks that require locomotion and perception but not fine manipulation. The "kinetic things" Pathak mentioned are the next phase. The question is how far away that phase is, and the answer is: closer than anyone is comfortable with.
The Chinese Hardware Capital
While Foundation builds soldiers in America, China is building the workforce. In Shenzhen, the hardware capital of the world, a new job category has emerged: humanoid robot operator. Workers are paid to physically guide humanoid robots through tasks - walking, grasping, opening doors - while the robot's AI learns from their movements. It is teleoperation as a service, and it is how Chinese labs are generating the training data needed to close the autonomy gap.
The $6 billion Chinese startup building hands for humanoids is the supply chain story of the robotics industry. Most humanoid companies do not build their own hands. They buy them. The hand is the bottleneck - the hardest mechanical subsystem to manufacture at scale - and the company that solves hand production becomes the TSMC of robotics. A Chinese startup is currently the frontrunner.
The consumer side is moving just as fast. Unitree, the Chinese robotics company, has a humanoid robot for sale on AliExpress for $4,370. That is less than a used car. It is not a frontier robot - it is a research platform, a toy, a proof of concept - but it is a humanoid robot you can buy on an e-commerce site and have shipped to your door. The price curve is the one to watch.
The Lethal Gap
Foundation Future Industries is not the only company exploring military applications for humanoids, but it is the most explicit. Pathak's willingness to say "kinetic things" on the record is unusual. Most robotics companies maintain a careful distance from military applications, at least publicly. The pattern in the industry is to build a general-purpose platform and let the military figure out how to use it. Foundation is building the platform and the weapons.
The ethical framework for armed humanoid robots does not exist. The military has rules of engagement. The Pentagon has AI ethics guidelines. Neither addresses the specific case of a bipedal, humanoid-form robot carrying a weapon in a combat environment. The uncanny valley is not just a design problem. It is a moral one. A drone that kills is a tool. A humanoid that kills is a soldier. The distinction matters to the humans who would fight alongside it.
The Phantom MK1 is being tested in Ukraine. The 1X Neo is being tested in offices. Both are learning. Both are getting better. The only question is which one arrives first at the point where the distinction between them no longer holds.
